Real3d Scanner V2
A research platform for structured-light 3D scanning
Real3d Scanner V2 lets you build your own structured-light 3D scanner with a single camera and a video projector. It provides a complete platform to research 3D scanning systems and analyze parameters involved in SL scanning. The application is also an extensible mesh and point-cloud processing system — smoothing, cleaning, filtering, decimation, reconstruction from points, registration, merging, and hole filling. It imports and exports more than 60 3D geometry formats, including U3D (3D-PDF ready), PLY, STL, OBJ, OFF, 3DS, WRL, COLLADA, X3D, and IV. It also enables viewing, converting, editing, and enhancing 2D images in a 3D environment with smoothing, noise removal, edge detection, resizing, and color adjustments.

Real3d Scanner V2 was built as a broad research and development platform rather than a narrow capture tool. It brings together structured-light acquisition, point-cloud and mesh processing, 2D image handling, and manufacturing-oriented simulation so a full scanning workflow can be explored in one application.
In practice that meant using the same environment to calibrate capture hardware, reconstruct geometry, clean and register scans, convert image-derived datasets such as DICOM to meshes, and prepare outputs for exchange formats including U3D for 3D PDF workflows.
Rendering features
The rendering stack grew out of day-to-day work with scanned meshes, point clouds, and medical data. It was designed to handle large scenes, preserve geometric fidelity during cleanup, and support export for documentation and downstream manufacturing pipelines.
- Open large numbers of meshes and point clouds
- Export 3D-PDF-ready U3D files
- Import and export of over 60 well-known 3D geometry file formats
- Subdivision: loop, sqrt(3), butterfly, linear, bi-tri, and 3-split
- Surface reconstruction from point clouds
- Feature-preserving smoothing and fairing
- Mesh registration, cleaning, merging, hole filling, voxelization
- Convert DICOM images to 3D STL/triangular meshes
- Mesh decimation while maintaining fidelity
- Batch processing of filtering, surfaces, and registration
- UV texture rendering
- Perspective or parallel view with sectioning
- Texture, material, color, light, edge, and silhouette rendering
- OpenGL shader support — write and apply your own shader
- High-quality snapshots and AVI video recording for 360° animation
The legacy application also exposed broad import and export coverage across well-known geometry formats, with a dedicated catalogue of supported formats and direct support for 3D-PDF-ready U3D output.
Real-time structured-light 3D scanning
The scanning module supported both live acquisition and offline reconstruction from recorded video. That made it useful not only for building a scanner around a camera and projector, but also for experimenting with capture timing, phase unwrapping, and reconstruction parameters during research.
- Capture color and texture during real-time 3D scanning
- Scan with 3, 4, 5, or 7-step phase-shifting fringe patterns
- Perform 3D scanning from a recorded AVI video file
- 360° scanning with auto-alignment and registration
- Real-time point-cloud or triangular-surface reconstruction
- Powerful phase-unwrapping algorithms
- Collimating and non-collimating phase-to-coordinate conversion
- Export real-time fringe images
- Record videos
- Camera calibration
- Export of point clouds or triangular surfaces
- Filter, reconstruct, register, merge, optimize, hole-fill, and decimate easily
Real-time virtual 3D scanner
The virtual scanner mirrored the optical workflow in software so pattern resolution, coordinate acquisition, and reconstruction behaviour could be evaluated on CAD or simulated geometry before moving to a physical setup.
- Scan high-resolution point cloud and triangular surface with texture and color for any 3D virtual/CAD object
- Generate and export horizontal or vertical fringe patterns
- Analyze scanning parameters in real time
- Real-time scanning at any pattern resolution (e.g. 512×512, 1024×768)
- Export real-time fringe (object + reference) images
- Export point cloud or triangular surface
2D image features
Scanner V2 also included a lightweight image workspace for viewing, converting, and enhancing 2D data inside the same 3D-oriented environment. This made it practical to inspect source imagery, capture live camera feeds, and prepare inputs without leaving the application.
- View, convert, edit, and enhance 2D images in a 3D environment
- Smoothing, edge detection, resizing, and color adjustments
- Activate 3D animation with 2D images
- Import/export of more than 15 image file formats including JPG, PNG, BMP, TIF
- Display live camera feed in 3D environment
CNC cutting simulation
The CNC module extended the platform beyond scanning and inspection into manufacturing simulation, including rafter and wood-processing scenarios where tool choice, feed conditions, and generated G-code needed to be verified before machining.
- CNC machining for rafter and wood processing
- Material removal with ball mill, end mill, and other cutters
- Cutting simulation with multiple tools
- Adjustable cutting conditions — feed rate, RPM, tool radius and angle
- G-code generation and verification
- Multi-threading for parallel data processing
